ADMIRAL WILLIAM J. CROWE, JR.

William J. Crowe, Jr. (1925 - 2007)

William James Crowe, Jr. was born in La Grange, Kentucky. Crowe was a United States Navy Admiral who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, and as ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Bill Clinton. President Ronald Reagan nominated Crowe to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1985. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1947, he served as assistant to the Naval Aide of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

During his career, Crowe served as an aide to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations and was Commanding Officer of the USS Trout from 1960 to 1962. Crowe earned a master's degree in education at Stanford University and an M.A. and a Ph.D in Political Science at Princeton University. During the Vietnam War, he was the senior advisor to the Vietnamese Riverine Force.

Crowe's years of service spanned from 1946 through 1989 and his awards included four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, three Navy Distinguished Service Medals, three Legion of Merits, one Bronze Star, seven Air Medals, and one Presidential Medal of Freedom.
