MAJOR GENERAL CAMPBELL B. HODGES

Major General Campbell B. Hodges was born at Elm Grove Plantation in Bossier Parish, Louisiana March 27, 1881.

 

He was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduation he began military service as a Lieutenant with the 30th Infantry on July 26, 1909 and was transferred to the 5th Infantry on April 22, 1910.

 

He was Professor of Military Science and Tactics, Commandant of the Cadets and Professor of Spanish at Louisiana State University from August 22, 1910 to December 15, 1912.

 

He served as Regimental Exchange Officer at Vera Cruz, Mexico from May, 1914 to August, 1915 and was awarded the Mexican Service Badge. During World War I he was acting Chief of Staff for the 31st Division and was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal for his service in that role.

 

He served with the 31st Division in France on the Meuse-Argonne front in 1918 and was awarded the Victory Medal and two Bronze Stars. After serving with honors in World War I, he went on to serve as Commandant of the Cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

 

He was appointed President of Louisiana State University in 1929 but was called to serve as the top military adviser to President Herbert Hoover, serving from 1929 to 1933. He represented President Hoover at the funeral of former President Taft while in that role. In 1939 he was appointed Commanding General of the 5th Division and remained there until September 3, 1940.

 

He served as Commander of the United States Army V Corps from October 20, 1940 to March 16, 1941. He was then appointed President of Louisiana State University again on July 1, 1941 and served as that schools president until 1944, when he suffered a slight stroke and retired.  

 

He died November 1944.
